This composition is inspired by Mullaipāttu, a Sangam Tamil poem from Pattuppāṭṭu, portraying the Mullai landscape—pastoral lands marked by patience, fidelity, and waiting.
The poem captures a wife’s inner monologue as she waits for her warrior-husband, who has promised to return before the onset of monsoon (Kār Kālam). Nature, time, and emotion move together, and the rain-bearing clouds themselves seem to pause for his victorious return.
Archaeological insights from the Keezhadi excavations near Madurai bring alive this world—its dwellings, ornaments, land use, and lived culture—mirroring the landscapes described in Sangam poetry: Kurinji, Mullai, Marutham, Neythal, and Palai.
