What If

We all walk around like we know ourselves,

Showing one version to everybody else.

Keeping certain truths where they can’t be seen, Then wondering why they don’t know what we really mean. We all do it.

Midnight scrolling, comparing our lives,

Looking at somebody else through a highlight. Everybody wants love, everybody wants attention, But nobody wants to admit when they’re desperate for connection.

We talk, we flirt, we get attached,

Tell ourselves we ain’t expecting nothing back. Then somebody disappears and suddenly it hurts, Now we’re questioning what we did, what they did first.

Who takes the blame when nobody wants it Who says, “I did that,” when pride gets involved Maybe we’re all waiting for somebody else To admit what happened wasn’t entirely our fault.

But what if…

Don’t wanna take the fault…

If that’s all it takes to make it happen.

We’d rather say, “It wasn’t me,”

Than ask ourselves what if it was

Everybody pointing somewhere else,

But what if we’re the reason that it does

What if I was wrong

What if you were too

What if neither one of us

Ever knew the whole truth

We’ve all got something we don’t say at first, Something we’re afraid might change what we’re worth. So we give somebody pieces, let ’em fill in the rest,

Then get mad when their picture ain’t what we meant. We want honesty,

But how honest are we

We want somebody real,

While editing what they’re allowed to see.

We want affection even when we know

It might only last till tomorrow.

We’d rather feel something temporary

Than sit for a minute with nothing at all.

Then it goes wrong.

Now who started it

Who finished it

Who crossed the line

Who didn’t listen

Everybody remembers the story

In a way that makes their own side different.

Maybe that’s human.

Maybe that’s the problem.

Or maybe the word “if”

Is where we finally solve it.

What if I listened

What if you stayed

What if we admitted

The mistakes that we made

What if being right

Was never worth the cost

What if taking responsibility

Doesn’t mean taking it all

What if we stopped saying,

“Look what you did,”

Long enough to ask

“What did I?”

Yeah…

That one hits different.
