Once, long ago
In a tune, my dad wrote
He sang of a “little green valley,”
And he wished that one day
By the power of God’s grace
That the “little green valley” was where he would be.
He longed for that valley with water so clear
And oak trees who’s tops touched the sky
The love of his life, in which he would share
A well-spring of love that would never run dry.
My dad was a dreamer
And a deep, profound thinker
With a life, you could watch on a big picture screen,
But when with friends and family
He was in that green valley
Right where he wanted to be.
With an acre of land on top of a hill
And water from a tap that was clear
His dreaming, though wild, would never prove ill
Cause he found his green valley right here.
But perhaps that green valley
Although it sounds crazy
Was never a dream for this place.
No, the “little green valley”
With its breathtaking scenery
Was where he would be with the Father one day
Because up there in heaven there’s thunderous rejoicing
At the sight of my dad at God’s pearly gates
And the angels surround him while God’s hand is anointing
And Bennett starts singing at the sight of God’s face.
So thankfully my daddy
Found his “little green valley”
And his memory will be with us forever right here
And a new day is dawning
With no more heavy-hearted longing
For the valley where the water is so clear.
