[Intro]
Debrief.
Final approach. The direct close. My best room, my best light, my best self.
I'm going to report it exactly as it happened.
Every word. Because I can't stop hearing them anyway.
[Verse 1]
Chamber mixer, and I engineered the corner, and I made the play at last
Full candor — my actual best move — "I'll be direct, I'm interested. In you."
No games, no channels, no warm intro. The close I save for closing.
And he didn't flinch, didn't glance around, didn't perform a single thing
He looked at me the way he looks at loaded bars — assessed, unafraid, level —
And said, not unkindly, five words:
"What are you trying to accomplish?"
[Verse 2]
And I had answers — I ALWAYS have answers — and I watched them die in order:
"You're remarkable" — "That's an observation, not an objective."
"I think we'd be extraordinary" — "At what?"
"I don't lose" — and he nodded, gentle, like I'd finally said something true:
"I know. That's the problem you're solving. I'm not the solution to it."
And then, quieter, the kill shot dressed as kindness:
"You've done the work on me. Do it on that question. It's harder. It's worth more."
[Chorus]
What are you trying to accomplish
Five words, and my entire deck went white
Every close I've ever run had an answer riding shotgun
And the vault, the actual vault, was EMPTY when he asked
I wanted to win him to prove — to prove —
(prove WHAT, counselor? To WHOM?)
The question. The question.
(...I don't
— I don't know.)
[Verse 3]
And he didn't walk away, that's the part that's keeping me up — he STAYED
Finished it like a mentor at an exit interview I didn't know I'd scheduled:
"You're formidable. Genuinely. And you've aimed it at acquiring proof
that you're worth what you already cost. Nobody can close that deal FOR you."
And then — courteous, complete, the same as everyone, at last I understood the same —
"Good night. Do the diligence that matters."
And he went home. To her. Obviously. To the life. The whole unpurchasable life.
[Verse 4]
Undefeated. Twenty-seven years, every process, every room, every term sheet
And the first loss isn't him — I heard it by midnight, give me some credit —
The first loss is the vault. The empty vault. The objective I never drafted
I've been closing my whole life and never once asked what I was trying to accomplish
And a man twice my age asked it in a corner in ten seconds
and the entire M&A of me
went white
[Outro]
Debrief concludes.
Status of the campaign: withdrawn. Not lost. Withdrawn. (Lost.)
Status of me: unknown. Genuinely unknown. First unknown in the file.
New matter opened. Client: me. Engagement: the question.
No timeline. No comps. No precedent.
(...I don't know what I'm trying to accomplish.)
(...noted.)
