[Intro]
Debrief. The reception.
I have been dismantled by professionals before. I HAVE. Depositions. Partners. Boards.
I have never been dismantled by someone smiling like we were about to be friends.
Verbatim. All of it. I couldn't forget a word if I billed for it.
[Verse 1]
VIP room, and I ran my approach — the couple by the windows, him mid-story
And she PEELED off and intercepted me at six feet out, glass raised, warm as June:
"You must be the consultant! My minion told me about you — great firm, love your managing partner."
Charming. Bright. Delighted. And underneath the delight, a door
closing behind me that I hadn't heard me walk through.
She knew me on sight. She came PREPARED. The incumbent runs intelligence.
[Verse 2]
And it was lovely — that's the part I need on record, it was LOVELY —
right up until I said the thing, the standard thing, the thing that always lands:
"He's remarkable — honestly I'd cook for that man just to talk shop" — light, deniable, tested
And she LAUGHED. Real laughter. Head back. Delighted with me. And then:
"Oh honey. I don't cook. I don't have to. He cooks better than anyone he's ever dated —
his mother was a professional. Biscuits from scratch. So. What else?"
[Chorus]
What else — two words, and she walked my whole portfolio
Cook? He does. Connect? She IS the network. Polish? Hire it. Close? She closes towns.
Every asset I've ever led with, priced, matched, or purchasable
"To get anywhere near this, you'd have to be useful — to him AND to me.
And sweetheart —" glass tap, smile, the warmest violence I have ever survived —
"I staff useful."
What else
(...I didn't have a what else. There's never not been a what else.)
[Verse 3]
And then she did the thing that's keeping me up, the thing I can't out-lawyer:
She got NICE. Genuinely. Refilled my glass herself and said, easy:
"I like you. I get a little stabby about him — ask literally anyone — but I like you.
You're wasted on this play. You know that, right? A woman like you, running THIS play?"
And across the room he signed a book and never looked over
and somehow that was the worst part. Not watched. Not warned. Not NECESSARY to warn.
[Verse 4]
Exit analysis, and I'll say it here because it goes nowhere else:
She wasn't defending territory. Territory defends itself when it's REAL.
She was doing INTAKE — same as everyone, HER version — and I failed the same question
Wearing different clothes: what do you bring. What are you FOR. What else.
And by the door, the kid with the lanyard carried water to the watchful one, laughing
Useful. Effortlessly, obliviously useful. The whole doctrine, walking, in sneakers.
(...noted.)
(...what else. What ELSE. I'm going to find the what else.)
(...proceeding.)
