[Intro]
Ceiling.
Six Degrees. The event. HER event.
And yes — I knew whose room I was walking into. I did my research. Obviously. It's me.
What I didn't know was how big the room actually was. Order of events. Go.
[Verse 1]
Career night, campus flyers, "Six Degrees" — everybody knows somebody, prove it
Ten minutes a table with people who've BUILT things, rotate, repeat
And she's running it — I clocked her from the door, brewery laugh, headphones-off, the developer
Working the room like weather, and ceiling, I wasn't even nervous. I was READY.
I came with pages, a nametag, a why. I came as the girl I built.
Table one. Clock starts. Go.
[Verse 2]
And the tables, ceiling. The TABLES.
The bank president — THE bank president, from the briefing, from the LIST — table three
A CEO, a builder, a woman from the developer's own shop
And table four, my book comes up, and the CEO goes: "You write? Then you should read —
oh, you'd know him actually, the aviation guy, the doctor, the one who —"
And I said "I've read it. Twice. He assigned it." And the table went: "...assigned?"
And I sat there blushing like a person with a LORE. I have LORE now. In THIS room.
[Verse 3]
And then I saw him. Across the hall. A table of strangers, leaning in.
Backup mentor — of course. Of COURSE. He's usually here. This is his habitat too.
No green bag, and the room adjusted anyway — you see how he moves
Six degrees of separation, ceiling? He's degree ZERO. Half the strings run through him.
And I watched strangers get the both-earbuds treatment, ten minutes at a time
And thought: a year ago I invented reasons to stand near that. Tonight I'm ON THE SCHEDULE.
[Chorus]
Six degrees — and the strings lit up all night
Everybody knows somebody, and somebody's always more
The quiet ones have records, the runners have empires
And the man I mapped at gym-scale doesn't fit the map anymore
Ten minutes a table, and every table knew a thread of him
Six degrees
(...I only ever had one. Turns out the room's been holding hundreds.)
[Verse 4]
Last rotation: her. The runner sits the final round. Ten minutes. HER.
And she read my nametag, smiled like mid-conversation, and went:
"So — what are you trying to accomplish?" — THE QUESTION. House style. I HAD it. Full size.
And she was QUICK, ceiling — two contacts, one correction, "send the pages" — and then, laughing, easy:
"I'm not the smartest person in most rooms — I'm just marrying him.
You know what a lifetime MENSA card means? Actually means? He forgets he has it. THAT's what it means."
[Verse 5]
And the doctrine landed sideways, the way the good ones do:
The old lifter at my gym? ELEVEN records. State and national. Bench. Over sixty. ELEVEN.
Nobody at that gym would know. He's just the old guy with the handshake.
"People are more than where you meet them" — I wrote it that night on the program margin —
"the room is always deeper than the door." Every room. Every door. All year. Proven.
[Chorus]
Six degrees — and here's the part that reorganized me:
One of the rarest minds in ANY room spent a year of mornings saying mine back
Took the earbuds out. Assigned me homework. Told her about my question at their table.
The horizon's not for reaching — you arrive already standing there, or not at all
But the standing-there is REPS, and the reps are mine to run
Six degrees
(...degree zero said good question. I'm keeping the whole night.)
[Outro]
Inventory, ceiling: two contacts. One correction. Pages: requested. Lore: confirmed. Program margin: doctrine.
And a text sent from the parking lot — I HAVE the number, I USED the number, like a person:
"Great event. I get it now."
Reply, eleven minutes: "Told you she runs a good room. Keep writing."
Six degrees, ceiling.
The strings are real. Start pulling honestly.
(...degree zero replied)
