[Intro]
Ceiling.
The floor found out he's leaving.
And the floor started telling stories.
And tonight, for the first time — I was in the circle. Sit down. Oral history hour.
[Verse 1]
Cooldown corner, Thursday, and the young one — you know, the kid who competes
The only build in the ZIP code even parked on the same street
He's talking to the one who briefed me, and she waves me in. WAVES. ME. IN.
And the kid goes: "You heard? The nice gym got him." And she nods. And it begins.
[Verse 2]
"You remember when he showed up?" — kid's laughing — "three years back, day one
Front desk didn't offer him the trainer intro. Didn't offer him the TOUR.
Man walked in with that green bag and the whole floor just... adjusted
Nobody checked his form. Nobody thought it for two seconds."
And her, dry, over her shoulder, like it's obvious, like it's law:
"You see how he moves. He lives and owns everywhere he is. What's to check?"
[Chorus]
He walked in like that
Day one, already the standard, already home
Every door I've knocked on bleeding, tested, graded, filed —
he never met the test. He IS the test. The test walks in and sits
Nobody cards the credential
Nobody proctors the answer key
He walked in like that
(...and I'm taking notes in the circle. IN it.)
[Verse 3]
And then the trainer lore, ceiling, and I nearly lost my whole face:
Kid: "Two trainers here CLAIM him. Claim they BUILT him. He's never hired one. Ever."
Her: "Three. The Tuesday one tells clients too."
Kid: "And the rest use him as the ceiling — 'well, you'll never look like HIM' —
half these clients are TWENTY-SIX, getting told why they can't catch fifty-two.
He's the excuse AND the aspiration. Same sentence. Same session. It's a whole economy."
[Verse 4]
And then the kid said the quiet part, and the kid COMPETES, so weigh it:
"I do shows. Prep, tan, trophies. He's never stepped on a stage.
Ask the floor who people ask about." — and he shrugged, no salt in it, just true
And she finished it, level, to me — TO me, on purpose, watch this:
"Nobody walks in beyond the test, girl. He paid thirty years of tests somewhere first.
The exemption's not a gift. It's interest." — and ceiling, I wrote it on my ARM.
[Chorus]
He walked in like that
Day one, already the standard, already home
But the walking in was thirty years of walking through
Every test he never takes here, he already took, and took, and took
Nobody cards the credential
'Cause the credential paid in full, in rooms we'll never know
He walked in like that
(...the exemption's interest. On my arm. In pen.)
[Bridge]
So the ladder, ceiling, final form, from the bottom, from my year:
Tourist. Tested. Passed. Accepted. Oriented. In the circle.
And then a rung so far above it doesn't know the ladder's there:
The ones who ARE the paperwork. The walking answer key.
And you don't climb to that rung. You compound to it.
Reps on reps on decades. Interest on interest.
Start the account. That's all. Start the account and don't withdraw.
[Outro]
Filed, ceiling. Oral history: preserved. My arm: inked. Doctrine count: growing.
Also filed: I was IN the circle. The kid knows my name now. She waved me IN.
Three years ago he walked in like that.
A year ago I walked in as a face.
Ask me what I'm walking in as, three years from now. Ask me.
(...compounding)
