[Intro]
Ceiling.
It happened. An hour and ten minutes.
I've been sitting in my car for two.
Chronological order. Deep breath. Go.
[Verse 1]
Saturday, the place on Third, and there's the daylight version of the man
No green bag, no chalk, just a regular-sized legend with an Americano plan
And I sat down with nineteen questions, and before I asked him one
He stirred his coffee once and said: "So. What are you trying to accomplish?"
OF COURSE. Of course that's first. The key turns every lock he owns.
And ceiling — I had an ANSWER. Whole. Rehearsed by living it. My own.
[Verse 2]
I gave him all of it: the minor, the paper, the two-twenty-five, the shelf
The want I finally named — to build a life with my name on it myself
And then the hard part, 'cause he'd earn the truth: "I studied you. A year. It's weird. I know it's—"
And he didn't even blink. "You sit two racks down and you pay attention.
Attention's not a crime, it's a skill pointed wrong. So — what'd you learn?"
And ceiling, no one's ever asked me for my FINDINGS. I presented. He LISTENED. I could burn.
[Chorus]
It was never a date, and it was better than one
An hour with the syllabus, a masterclass for the price of a bun
He asked more than he answered — that's the way the man pours
Every question was a door and every door of his was doors
"What are you trying to accomplish" — at life scale, at full size
And I finally had my answer, and he heard it, and he nodded —
the measured one. The measured one, twice.
(...I presented my findings. He listened.)
[Verse 3]
And the doctrine, ceiling, 'cause I wrote it on a napkin, hands still shaking:
"You don't need my map. Maps are mine. You need MILES. Yours. Start accruing."
"You said there might be a book in you? Then that's homework, not a compliment.
Deadlines make writers. Compliments make drafts."
And the one that's still rearranging me, said easy, stirring, plain:
"Nothing I have is permanent. I re-earn all of it, every day. The body, the work, her.
The day you think it's yours to keep is the day it starts to leave."
[Verse 4]
And then the hour was up, because his life was waiting, because it's FULL
He left the tip, took the cup, and at the door he turned, casual, cruel:
"Good questions. All of them. See you at seven thirty —
for a couple more weeks, anyway."
And there it was, the clock inside the gift, the leaving in the got
And I sat in my car for two whole hours holding everything I'd caught
[Chorus]
It was never a date, and it was better than one
An hour with the syllabus, and now the syllabus is done
He handed me the homework — miles, deadlines, a book with my name
And a doctrine on a napkin: nothing's kept, it's all re-earned, every day, the same
"What are you trying to accomplish" — I answered at full size
And he heard it, and he nodded — the measured one. Twice.
(...napkin's getting framed)
[Bridge]
A year of watching bought me nothing
Seven seconds bought an hour
The hour bought a syllabus
And the syllabus is: go
Not toward him. Not away. Just — accrue. Build. Earn it daily.
He's leaving in two weeks
And somehow that's not the headline anymore
[Outro]
Filed, ceiling, all of it:
Findings: presented. Doctrine: napkin. Homework: a book. A BOOK. Assigned. Deadline pending.
He re-earns everything daily. Even her. ESPECIALLY her. That's the whole cheat code, isn't it. There's no cheat code.
Two weeks left at seven thirty.
Chapter's not over. But the course just went distance-learning.
(...miles. accruing.)
