[Intro]
Ceiling. The question deployed.
It did not go as planned.
It went bigger. Sit down.
[Verse 1]
So you know I've had it drafted since like week two of the archive
"Something about grip" — well, it graduated, it's alive
My deadlift's stalling — one eighty-five, double overhand, bar's rolling out
And I researched every fix but every forum fights another forum's mouth
Redlined it like a thesis. Version nine. Word-perfect. Cited. Tight.
Timed it to his rest, walked up steady, asked it clean. Did everything right.
[Verse 2]
And he took an earbud out, and listened all the way through, patient, still
And I braced for cues and angles, chalk opinions, hook-grip drills
And instead he looked at me a second, calm as Sunday, and went:
"What are you training for?"
...
Ceiling. I had nothing. Not a sentence. Not a word. Not a percent.
[Chorus]
What are you training for
Five words, and my whole binder's blank
I brought him version nine of HOW
And version zero of a WHY
I've got an archive on this man
And an empty page on me
What are you training for
What are you training, what are you TRYING for
...I don't know. I don't know. Working on it presently.
[Verse 3]
And he wasn't being cryptic, 'cause he walked me through the door:
"Can't coach a deadlift till I know what sport the deadlift's for.
A powerlifter drops the bar — the up's the only rep that counts.
A bodybuilder fights the down — the lowering is where you're built.
Same bar. Same weight. Different sport. Different everything downstream.
So — strength? Physique? Sport? Health? What's the win condition, what's the dream?"
[Verse 4]
And I said I'd think about it, and he nodded, one earbud back, all grace
Said "come find me when you know — then your grip's a five-minute fix" — and gave me space
And ceiling, here's where it detonated, somewhere on the drive back home:
I've been doing borrowed programs in a sport I never chose
My major. My workouts. My whole aesthetic. My five-year non-plan.
I've been executing someone else's exercise since this LIFE began.
[Chorus]
What are you training for
Five words, and my whole binder's blank
I brought him version nine of HOW
And version zero of a WHY
Turns out every rep's a vote
For a race I never picked
What are you training for
What are you training, what are you TRYING for
...version one of a why. In progress. Stick around. It's getting thick.
[Bridge]
'Cause everybody in that building's doing everything just fine
Perfect form on random exercises, borrowed from a feed, offline
And the scariest question isn't heavy, isn't loaded, isn't mean
It's five calm words from a quiet man
Who asked me what I've never asked me
What's the sport? What's the win? What's the WHY behind the scene?
[Outro]
So. Homework, ceiling. Real homework.
Not about him. First assignment in this whole saga that's not about him.
What am I training for?
In the gym. And — yeah. Everywhere. I heard it too.
Come find me when you know, he said.
So I guess I'm going to go find out.
(...drafting a why)
