Hippopotamus Blues

I met a hippo in the rain last night

She wore a tutu that was way too tight

Said her name was Pam or maybe Sam

Who knows

She tap-danced once and stepped on my toes

Oh hippopotamus

Why so anonymous

You’re large

You’re loud

You’re fabulous

With a belly that bounces

And a grin so wide

Hippopotamus

Let’s go for a ride

She said

"Climb aboard

Don’t mind the mud"

Her laugh shook the trees

Sent birds in a flood

We sailed down the river on her hefty back

She sang off-key

But the rhythm was crack

Oh

She twirled

Oh

She spun

Under the moon

We had some fun

Oh hippopotamus

Why so anonymous

Let’s go for a ride

She said

“Life’s too short to stay in the muck

Dance like nobody’s watching

And who gives a duck”

We splashed

We laughed

In the swampy groove

Even the crocodiles started to move
