(Verse 1)
The storm bit hard off the Spanish Shore, when the Gull went under with a roar,
The Captain fled in the pinnace small, and left twelve hands to the breaker's fall.
He took the coin and he took the chest, and he left us choking in the wave's cold crest.
I grabbed a spar as the quarterdeck split, and swore by the stars I’d make him pay for it!
(Chorus)
So haul on the halyard and sheet the sail home!
We’re tracking the dog through the churning foam!
No mercy we’ll lend and no quarter we’ll show,
We’ll send that old rascal to the deep below!
(Verse 2)
Five long years in a merchant hull, I worked my fingers to a battered skull,
Learning the rigging and the way of the trade, saving every copper for a cold sharp blade.
I found his track in a Tortuga dive, where the scoundrel squandered what he took alive.
He had a new brig, pristine and grand, built on the blood of his former band.
(Chorus)
So haul on the halyard and sheet the sail home!
We’re tracking the dog through the churning foam!
No mercy we’ll lend and no quarter we’ll show,
We’ll send that old rascal to the deep below!
(Verse 3)
I joined his crew with my face pulled low, a nameless hand in the berth below.
I scrubbed his holystone, I pulled his rope, while my heart fed dark on a single hope.
I checked the timber near the water line, where the rot grows soft and the planks align.
I waited for the night when the gale blew high, to strike my blow beneath a pitch-black sky.
(Chorus)
So haul on the halyard and sheet the sail home!
We’re tracking the dog through the churning foam!
No mercy we’ll lend and no quarter we’ll show,
We’ll send that old rascal to the deep below!
(Verse 4)
The wind screamed fierce off the rocky reef, as I slipped abaft like a silent thief.
I spiked the helm so she wouldn't steer, then I loosened the anchor and the capstan gear.
The Captain came running with a lantern bright, his face turned pale in the yellow light.
"Who jammed the rudder?" he roared in fear, as the breakers thundered terribly near!
(Verse 5)
I stepped from the dark by the mainmast trunk, and said, "Remember the Gull you sunk?
You left us drowning while you made off free, but the dark water never forgot your fee!"
He pulled his pistol, but the powder was wet, from the bucket I poured where his stores were set.
I drove my marlinspike straight through his vest, and left him flat on the deck to rest.
(Chorus)
So haul on the halyard and sheet the sail home!
We’re tracking the dog through the churning foam!
No mercy we’ll lend and no quarter we’ll show,
We’ll send that old rascal to the deep below!
(Outro)
The brig struck the rocks with a grinding sound, as I leaped for a timber and cleared the ground.
I rode a drift plank to the sandy shore, and watched his grand ship sink forevermore.
The account is settled, the debt is paid, by the jagged reef and the marlin blade!
So drink up, lads, to a reckoning done, beneath the glare of the rising sun!
