The gales from the east were a-howlin' real sweet,
Till the lookout yelled out, "Three tall sails in the fleet!"
Three corsair black crafts on our weather-gage lay,
Fast-bearin' upon us to cut off our way.
The cap'n swung round with a scowl on his face,
"Shake out the topgallants! We’re in for a chase!"
The main-tack was hauled and the foresail set full,
As we bounded ahead like a mad wooden bull.

By the turn of the noon, they had gained on our lee,
Spread wide in a net on the foam of the sea.

And sent splintered spars to the deck with a chore!
Our gunner, old Ned, brought his crew to the line,
"Give 'em grape to the hull, boys, and pay 'em back fine!"
We returned with a broadside that tore through their gear,
But the other two closed and came sweepin' in near.

In a swirl of dark foam where our fortunes were wrecked.
We gave 'em three cheers as we slipped 'neath the wave,
To sleep with the sunken, the bold, and the brave.
So pull, me brave bullies, and sing as we go!

The timbers have split and the battle is done,
And we’ll rest in the deep at the set of the sun!
