WHEN I DON’T UNDERSTAND
Verse 1
There was a man beneath an ancient sky,
With fields of green and children by his side,
His table full, his name was spoken well,
And every morning he would kneel and pray.
He loved his God when every barn was full,
When laughter echoed underneath his roof,
But somewhere far beyond what eyes could see,
A question rose about what faith could be.
Would he still love You with an empty hand?
Would he still trust what he could not understand?
Pre-Chorus
Then came the wind,
Then came the flame,
Then came the messenger
Calling out his name.
One by one
The good things disappeared,
Until the only thing he had
Was God and all his tears.
Chorus
I will trust You when I don’t understand,
When everything I’ve built slips through my hands.
When heaven doesn’t answer like I prayed,
And I can’t find a reason for the pain.
I may wrestle,
I may question,
I may cry out where I stand—
But I will keep on talking to You
When I don’t understand.
Verse 2
He buried children he had watched grow tall,
Lost fields and flocks and nearly lost it all.
Then sickness came and covered him in scars,
And nights grew longer underneath the stars.
His friends arrived with answers neatly tied:
“You must have sinned. God always has a side.”
But Job looked through the ashes at those men:
“You weren’t there.
You don’t know where I’ve been.”
He didn’t need another easy line.
He needed God to meet him in the night.
Chorus
I will trust You when I don’t understand,
When everything I’ve built slips through my hands.
When heaven doesn’t answer like I prayed,
And I can’t find a reason for the pain.
I may wrestle,
I may question,
I may cry out where I stand—
But I will keep on talking to You
When I don’t understand.
Verse 3 — Today
Now Job wears different clothes
And walks our streets.
He’s sitting in an empty driver’s seat
Outside the hospital at 2 a.m.,
Trying to find the strength to breathe again.
He’s staring at a balance he can’t pay,
She’s packing up a lifetime in a day.
Someone’s closing down the business that they built,
Someone’s carrying a grief they never earned.
A mother whispers, “God, where did You go?”
A father asks the question no one knows.
Someone gets the call.
Someone loses home.
Someone wakes beside a pillow
Knowing they’re alone.
And somewhere in the darkness
Another Job still stands,
Holding onto heaven
With two trembling hands.
Chorus
I will trust You when I don’t understand,
When everything I’ve built slips through my hands.
When heaven doesn’t answer like I prayed,
And I can’t find a reason for the pain.
I may wrestle,
I may question,
I may cry out where I stand—
But I will keep on talking to You
When I don’t understand.
Bridge
Then God spoke—
“Where were you when I laid the earth below?
Have you commanded morning where to go?
Can you hang Orion in the sky?
Can you tell the restless sea how far to rise?
Do you know where every wild thing sleeps?
Have you walked the floor beneath the deep?
There are things
