[THE LORD OF BUGS]
[Dark Awakening — dark country / gospel satire]
[Verse 1]
Well, I heard the trumpet blowing,
Thought the cavalry had come,
I grabbed my boots and headed out
To see what God had done.
But there weren't any soldiers,
No swords or loaded guns—
Just a billion hungry locusts
Eating everything for lunch.
[Pre-Chorus]
The caterpillar took the garden,
The palmerworm took the corn,
The cankerworm ate breakfast
Before the rooster blew his horn.
[Chorus]
Here comes the Lord of Bugs,
With the creepy-crawly host,
Hornets flying on the right hand,
Locusts thicker than a ghost.
Better hide your beans and cabbage,
Better cover up your grub—
Somebody opened Joel chapter two
And released the Lord of Bugs!
[Verse 2]
Moses had his frogs and flies,
Egypt had a lousy day,
Hornets got their marching orders:
"Go and chase those folks away!"
If heaven has an army,
Brother, this one's mighty strange—
No horses in the stable,
Just grasshoppers on the range.
[Pre-Chorus]
The preacher said, "Don't question it,
The Lord works from above."
I said, "That's one hell of a hornet
For a message about love."
[Chorus]
Here comes the Lord of Bugs,
With the creepy-crawly host,
Hornets flying on the right hand,
Locusts thicker than a ghost.
Better hide your beans and cabbage,
Better cover up your grub—
Somebody opened Joel chapter two
And released the Lord of Bugs!
[Bridge — spoken, dead serious]
"And behold...
There arose a mighty buzzing."
BZZZZZZZZZZZZ...
"RUN, BROTHER!
THE HORNETS HAVE RECEIVED THE WORD!"
[Verse 3]
Now I'm thinking back to Genesis,
Chapter one is on my mind,
Every creature had its blessing,
Everything was doing fine.
Then somewhere down the storyline
Things took a nasty turn—
Now God's commanding insects
To make the nations squirm.
Was this the same Creator
Who called creation good?
Or did somebody change the story
Somewhere underneath the hood?
[Final Chorus]
Here comes the Lord of Bugs,
The congregation better run,
Caterpillars ate the scripture,
And the termites got the Son.
The locust ate the offering,
The hornet stung the judge—
And I'm standing in my garden yelling,
"LORD—
THAT'S ENOUGH DAMN BUGS!"
[Outro — spoken]
The preacher said,
"Brother Stephen, have faith."
I said,
"I've got faith...
But I'm still buying bug spray." 😂
