Dad was gone before the sunrise hit the street

Steel-toe mornings, chasing ends we couldn’t meet

Mom was somewhere in a world I couldn’t see

Living loud but never there for me

We had dinners with the glow of a TV

No one talking, just a ghost of family

No laughter echoing down the hall

Just silence dressed like nothing’s wrong at all

We were breathing but we weren’t alive

Just passing time in the same four walls

We were strangers in the same house

Different hearts on the same couch

Static love through a broken screen

That’s what family meant to me

No Christmas lights, no family songs

Just quiet nights that felt too long

I learned to live without a sound

When no one else was around

Holidays came like any other day

No traditions, just time slipping away

I stopped asking if we’d ever be okay

Got used to watching life from far away

Years went by and everything just cracked

Family life just fell apart and we never made it back

Dad found a life with someone new

A different home, a different point of view

And I wonder if he thinks of how it affected us too

When he’s laughing and calls it new
