I salute the flag and recite the soldiers creed like a motto I search within myself a vision of the ethos of a warrior I hear the roaring in my mind The pride in the words I now utter Searching for priorities and inner strength They say we are the flags embodiment A testified script of discipline and standards A poised yet ever so mechanical instrument of fighting capabilities Perhaps we’re here for more than just war with these bodies A just notion that hearts can be changed An empathy for all United in representation A represebtion of unity and divine purpose The purpose to change hearts and minds and never in a specific order But a silent whisper of malice still lurks in the air The stench of dead bodies brown and cut down unfair The stench of segregation and the era of don’t ask don’t tell A silent whisper of nightmares not so distant in the rear Brown Bodies beaten, hanging from trees in states like Alabama Dark, heinous nightmares that are still a reality like Rodney King A sound of chackling chains from slave ships that had to be broken The suffrage carried on the broken backs from whips and scared hands from picking cotton I can hear the Marching.. the singing Together as one from Doctor Martin Luther King junior….in the not so rear distance Voices elevated so that equality and freedom could sing their ballet A song paid for that I may cash the monetary value of my position My position as woman, black, immigrant, educated Soldier Noncommissioned Officer Leader All opportunities that would of been denied as a birth right A cost now paid A bill now passed down That I make salute with eyes forward, chest held high Knowing that my mark was paved by the suffrage generation before me A ballet of change that I may now sing for generation to come A salute, A creed A position, A Duty A obligation the cross that I now must carry Change that I must fore go Laying my own brick to add to the already paved previously rocky path My salute, my presence, my creed, my leadership.. my suffrage to multiply change.
