...
[Intro – spoken, deep and rough]
They buried me six feet under.
Problem was...
I wasn't finished dying.
[Verse 1]
Blood on the highway,
moon hung low and red,
old Ford coughing smoke
like the devil's nearly dead.
They found me by the county line,
face down in the clay,
took my boots, took my wallet,
took my name away.
Mama cried at midnight,
Preacher said a prayer,
Sheriff signed the papers:
„Ain't nobody there.“
They wrapped me in a black sheet,
carried me away.
But dead men don't breathe, boy...
and I still had a say.
[Chorus]
I came back from the cold dirt,
black roses on my grave.
Hell opened up its mouth,
but I told it, „Not today.“
Mud beneath my fingernails,
blood upon my tongue.
They buried me a dead man –
but the devil buried wrong.
[Verse 2]
Three days in the darkness,
rain pounding overhead.
My heart kicked at midnight,
I heard voices of the dead.
I clawed through coffin timber,
dragged myself into the rain.
A man who crawls out of his grave
don't fear the dark again.
Black crow sitting by the doorway,
watching through the storm.
He looked into my hollow eyes
like he'd seen my kind before.
Then he spread his crooked wings
and vanished in the night.
I walked away from that damn grave
and left my past behind.
[Chorus]
I came back from the cold dirt,
black roses on my grave.
Hell opened up its mouth,
but I told it, „Not today.“
Mud beneath my fingernails,
blood upon my tongue.
They buried me a dead man –
but the devil buried wrong.
[Bridge – whispered]
Black car by the barn.
Shovel by the door.
Three men in the kitchen
that I ain't seen before.
One reaches for his pistol.
My hand goes underneath my coat.
He says:
„You're supposed to be dead.“
I say:
„Yeah...
I know.“
[Verse 3]
First shot killed the lantern,
second tore the wall.
Third man hit the floorboards
before he made the call.
I didn't come for killing.
I just wanted to go home.
But when you crawl out of a grave,
you don't come back alone.
I left the blood beneath the pines,
left my old life burning.
Behind me stood my gravestone.
Ahead, the black road turning.
[Final Chorus]
I came back from the cold dirt,
black roses on my grave.
Devil in my rearview,
God somewhere above my head.
They buried me a dead man,
said my soul had gone away.
But there's fire in these old bones
that the grave could never take.
[Outro – spoken]
If you find my gravestone
out beyond the county line...
Don't carve another date on it.
Leave it blank.
Because...
I AIN'T FINISHED DYING.
