The Scam and the Sting
by Robert Ramage
(Tempo / Feel:
Mid-tempo blues-rock, slow burn → confident finish)
Intro (low, sly)
Yeah…
Every game looks fair
Till you learn who wrote the rules
Verse 1 – The Approach
It starts off easy, just a friendly line
Late-night words crossing miles and time
Every answer tailored just right
Every promise wrapped up tight
They learn your fears, they learn your pain
Mirror your hope, repeat your name
Feels like fate, feels meant to be
Till something whispers, look again and see
Chorus
Making you believe is part of the scam
Whisper what you want, hide the sleight of hand
Lead you on, say whatever fits
Sell you dreams that don’t exist
Playing with your heart, twisting your mind
They’re good at what they do — they get you every time
Verse 2 – The Cost
One hand on your heart, one on your wallet
Smiling like angels, moving like thieves
Before you know it, you’re overdrawn
Wondering how you still believe
They don’t care — that’s the name of the game
Make you believe till you’re out on the streets
Every red flag dressed in white
Till the truth won’t sleep at night
Chorus
Making you believe is part of the scam
Whisper what you want, hide the sleight of hand
Lead you on, say whatever fits
Sell you dreams that don’t exist
Playing with your heart, twisting your mind
They’re good at what they do — they get you every time
Verse 3 – The Turn
Then I slowed it down, let the silence speak
Watched the story change when I wouldn’t pay
Funny how the cracks show through
When the money’s late or the questions stay
Love don’t rush, it don’t demand
Truth don’t need a helping hand
Every lie started tripping fast
When I stopped chasing the past
Bridge (pull it way down)
I didn’t raise my voice
Didn’t make a scene
Just asked for proof
You’d never seen
Verse 4 – The Sting
You stopped saying my name
Started watching the clock
Pushing hard for the end
When I wouldn’t unlock
I walked away with my name intact
You kept the mask but lost the act
You thought I was the fool all along
But knowing when to leave is where the power belongs
Final Chorus (lift, confident)
Making you believe was part of the scam
But believing you back — that was my plan
I let you talk, I let you spin
Watched you tell on yourself in the end
You played with my heart, tried my mind
But I saw the move just in time
Outro (spoken or half-sung)
That’s the scam…
And walking away?
That’s the sting.
