Moonlight drips on silver leaves
Deep beneath the willow trees
Tiny footsteps, velvet eyes
Watching where the cradle lies
Hush now, darling, do not weep
The fae don’t wander while you sleep
But if the window’s open wide
They may come with the turning tide
Oh, the fairies envy mortal hearts
The way they love, the way they are
They dance in circles, cold and pale
And steal the children without a trail
Softly singing through the night
Golden hair and candlelight
Little hands and porcelain skin
The fae will lure the children in
They weave their spells with honeyed songs
Promise where the lost belong
A crown of flowers, roots, and thorns
A child stolen before the dawn
Oh, the fairies envy mortal hearts
The way they break, the way they start
They cannot age, they cannot die
So they steal the laughter from human eyes
In the hollow hills they stay
Keeping stolen names away
Human mothers call and cry
But the woods give no reply
So lock your doors when dusk turns blue
And keep your children close to you
For jealous wings still drift unseen
Where moonlight stains the forest green
Oh, the fairies envy mortal hearts
The fleeting fire that makes them art
And every century, soft and wild
They steal away another child…
