Static in the speakers
Rain against the glass
Engine trembling underneath the night
Streetlights snapping past
Breathing uneven
Hands locked white on steel
Every second disappearing fast
Like time itself can feel
Downtown glowing in a violent blur
Concrete shaking every time I swerve
Sirens breaking through the midnight air
But I can’t stop there
Traffic splitting at the final second
Signal lights all bleeding red together
Heartbeat louder than the engine sounds
Like the whole world’s crashing down
Overpasses flicker overhead
Half the city sleeping in their beds
While the other half is chasing ghosts
And I’m running through them both
Phone light glowing in the passenger seat
One last message staring back at me
Four words that won’t leave my head
“Please just get here”
No time left for slowing down
No safe road to turn around
Every mile cuts razor thin
I have to make it in
If the skyline breaks apart tonight
I’ll still drive into the falling light
If the wheels give out beneath the rain
I’ll crawl the rest of the way
Blue lights burning in the mirror glass
Every second moving way too fast
World can crash around me now
I won’t stop somehow
Thunder rolling through the avenue
Headlights cutting straight through flooded roads
City noise turning into static waves
Everything begins to shake
Tires slipping near the riverside
Metal screaming every time I slide
One bad move and it all goes black
But I can’t think like that
Helicopters somewhere overhead
White beams tearing through the storm instead
Every corner getting harder now
Still I press it down
Radio voices somewhere far away
Like they’re speaking from another place
All I hear inside my chest
Is “not yet… not yet…”
And the rain comes harder
And the road turns darker
And the lines start blurring into one
Engine overheating
Vision fading, fleeting
But the night’s not taking anyone
Streetlights fracture
Time moves backward
Every breath feels thinner than before
But somewhere past the skyline
Past the sirens and the white lines
There’s still something worth running for
If the skyline breaks apart tonight
I’ll still drive into the falling light
If the wheels give out beneath the rain
I’ll crawl the rest of the way
Blue lights burning in the mirror glass
Every second moving way too fast
Even if the whole world falls
I still hear the call
Morning breaking cold and pale
Sirens fading in the distance now
Engine ticking in the silence
And one last breath of air
Rainwater sliding off the hood
City finally standing still
Empty streets beneath the sunrise
And a heart that never will
