KNOW YOURSELF — THE MIRROR
[INTRO — WHISPERED]
There is a place inside me
where every mask eventually falls.
No congregation can enter.
No teacher can stand there for me.
No book can answer for me.
There is only the mirror.
And I have spent years
afraid of what might look back.
I thought I wanted an answer.
I didn't know
I was asking for permission
to stop searching.
But the mirror never gave me permission.
It only asked:
Who are you?
And when I answered,
it asked again.
---
[VERSE I — THE FIRST LOOK]
I was taught to build a name
before I learned to build a self.
Given words before I knew their weight,
given rules before I knew their purpose,
given answers before I knew the questions.
So I became what the world could recognize.
A shape.
A role.
A collection of expectations
wearing a human face.
I learned the language of approval.
I learned how to hide uncertainty
behind certainty.
I learned how to say
“I know”
when what I really meant was
“I am afraid.”
Afraid that if I questioned the foundation,
the entire house would disappear.
Afraid that if I admitted I didn't know,
someone else would know better.
Afraid that if I looked beneath the surface,
I would discover something
I couldn't forgive.
So I turned away.
I kept the mirror covered.
I called the reflection a stranger.
I blamed the darkness
for showing me what I refused to see.
But darkness doesn't create the face.
It reveals it.
And eventually
I had nowhere left to run.
---
[PRE-CHORUS]
So I pulled the cloth away.
My hands were shaking.
My heart was screaming:
Don't look.
But something deeper answered:
Look anyway.
---
[CHORUS]
Know yourself.
Not the name they gave you.
Not the role they made you play.
Not the person you became
to survive another day.
Know yourself.
Look beneath the armor.
Look beneath the shame.
Look into every contradiction
you were taught to hate.
And if the mirror breaks—
don't worship the pieces.
Pick them up.
Learn from what they show.
You are not finished.
You are becoming.
---
[VERSE II — THE FACE IN THE GLASS]
The first thing I saw
was anger.
Not evil.
Not corruption.
Anger.
A fire I had buried
because I was afraid
of what it might become.
I saw every moment
I swallowed my voice.
Every humiliation
I pretended didn't matter.
Every boundary I never drew.
Every time I smiled
while something inside me
was begging to scream.
I wanted to condemn it.
I wanted to call it weakness.
But the mirror asked:
What is your anger trying to tell you?
And suddenly
the question was different.
Maybe anger wasn't my master.
Maybe it was a messenger.
Maybe beneath the fire
was grief.
Beneath the grief
was fear.
Beneath the fear
was something I had needed
and never learned how to ask for.
The shadow wasn't asking
to control me.
It was asking
to be understood.
So I listened.
Not obeyed.
Listened.
There is a difference.
And that difference
became the beginning
of responsibility.
