[Verse 1]
Red light turns green, somebody’s leaning on the horn,
Middle fingers flying like another war is born.
One wrong look, one wrong word, one moment out of place,
Everybody’s got a weapon in the anger on their face.
Kids go home from school with bruises no one sees,
Cruel words hit harder when they live inside your dreams.
We used to teach respect, lend a hand when someone fell,
Now we film somebody hurting and we send it straight to hell.
[Pre-Chorus]
When did kindness become weakness?
When did mercy disappear?
When did every disagreement
Turn into something we should fear?
[Chorus]
What happened to us?
When did we forget how to care?
Everybody wants a battle,
Everybody’s fighting everywhere.
While the bills climb higher,
And the working people drown,
We keep building walls around us
While our neighbors hit the ground.
We’ve got cameras on the corners,
Eyes following every move,
More machines collecting numbers,
But less compassion coming through.
Tell me,
What happened to us?
What happened to me and you?
[Verse 2]
There’s a man beneath a bridge with nowhere left to go,
Does he need another punishment, or somewhere safe and warm?
You can write another law and push him farther from your sight,
But you never solve the darkness just by hiding it at night.
I’m punching in for overtime, trying hard to stay afloat,
Every raise gets swallowed by another rising note.
Rent goes up, the groceries climb, the power bill comes due,
Yesterday one job was enough, today I’m working two.
And overtime was once the answer,
Now overtime won’t pay.
Every dollar that I’m earning
Seems to lose its strength each day.
[Chorus]
What happened to us?
When did we forget how to care?
Everybody wants a battle,
Everybody’s fighting everywhere.
Road rage in the traffic,
Bullying in the halls,
Politicians shouting louder
While the ordinary fall.
Cameras reading license plates,
Server towers scraping skies,
Technology keeps watching
While we’re told it’s for our lives.
Tell me,
What happened to us?
When did freedom close its eyes?
[Verse 3]
Cars becoming computers with a camera in the seat,
Everywhere another sensor, every corner on the street.
They say the future’s safer when the future knows your name,
But how much should a system know before we question what became?
Huge data centers humming, drinking power through the night,
Another little piece of life converted into bytes.
Maybe progress has a purpose, maybe some of it is good,
But progress without conscience never ends the way it should.
Because a nation isn’t cables,
It isn’t concrete, steel, or code.
It’s the people barely making it
While carrying the load.
[Bridge]
I don’t want another enemy.
I don’t want another war.
I don’t care who you voted for,
I want to know what we stand for.
Do we still believe in dignity?
Do we still help someone rise?
Can we disagree without hatred?
Can we look each other in the eyes?
Can we put the phone down for a minute?
Can we listen before we shout?
Can we stop treating human beings
Like problems to throw out?
[Breakdown]
Maybe morals aren’t dead.
Maybe values aren’t gone.
Maybe they’re buried underneath
Everything that’s gone wrong.
Maybe somewhere there’s a neighbor
Still leaving on the light.
Someone feeding someone hungry.
Someone standing up for right.
And maybe that’s where we begin,
Not with anger, not with fear.
One person choosing decency
While the whole world disappears.
[Final Chorus]
What happened to us?
Maybe we still have a choice.
We don’t have to join the hatred,
We don’t have to add our voice.
To every call for violence,
Every reason to divide,
Every system that forgets
There are human lives inside.
Let the cameras keep on turning,
Let the politicians fuss,
They can measure every number,
But they cannot measure us.
Because morals live in actions,
And values live in trust.
If we want this world to change,
Then it has to start with us.
So when our children ask the question,
When they look at what we’ve done,
I don’t want them asking sadly,
“What happened to us?”
I want them saying:
“They remembered who they were…
before it was too late.”
