In the preschool yard where shadows fell,

We were just two small souls living a silent hell.

They turned over the cot, let me crash to the floor,

They would leave me bruised scratched and beaten but I needed you more.

So they Locked me in darkness for endless cruel hours,

With No food, no water, while they ate and laughed with power .

When they would mocked all my tears and I felt so alone,

Your fingers through the fence was my home away from home

And we reached out through that cold iron line,

Little fingers locked, a heartbeat in time.

In a world that was heartless, I was always your defense,

Just two kids finding comfort with fingers through the fence.

They’d would tip back my chair just to watch me fall.
