Verse 1
Our greedy old captain sat down for a bite,
With an appetite fierce in the middle of night.
He called to the cook for a dish from the sea,
"Bring a fat salted herring," says he!
Chorus 1
And the herring went down with a splash and a splish,
Oh, the captain is eating a wonderful dish!
Verse 2
But one salted fish couldn't satisfy him,
So he grabbed for a crab that was looking quite grim.
He cracked open the shell with a terrible crunch,
To add to his midnight marine-flavored lunch!
Chorus 2
And the crab bit his tongue,
While the herring went down with a splash and a splish,
Oh, the captain is eating a wonderful dish!
Verse 3
He still was half-starving, the crew watched in dread,
As he reached for a squid that was purple and red.
It squirted its ink all over his vest,
As it slid down his throat to join all the rest!
Chorus 3
And the squid ink did fly,
And the crab bit his tongue,
While the herring went down with a splash and a splish,
Oh, the captain is eating a wonderful dish!
Verse 4
"More meat!" roared the captain, and reached out his hand,
To scoop up a lobster he’d caught near the land.
It snapped its great claws at the tip of his nose,
Before it went down where the dark water flows!
Chorus 4
And the lobster did pinch,
And the squid ink did fly,
And the crab bit his tongue,
While the herring went down with a splash and a splish,
Oh, the captain is eating a wonderful dish!
Verse 5
Then out of the galley came one final plate,
With an eel so enormous it frightened the mate.
It shocked the old captain right out of his boots,
But he swallowed it whole with some seaweed and roots!
Chorus 5
And the eel gave a shock,
And the lobster did pinch,
And the squid ink did fly,
And the crab bit his tongue,
While the herring went down with a splash and a splish,
Oh, the captain is eating a wonderful dish!
Verse 6
He wiped off his chin but he wanted some more,
So he scooped up a clam that was stuck to the floor.
It slammed its shell shut on his whiskers so tight,
He chewed it up whole just to win back the fight!
Chorus 6
And the clam clamped his beard,
And the eel gave a shock,
And the lobster did pinch,
And the squid ink did fly,
And the crab bit his tongue,
While the herring went down with a splash and a splish,
Oh, the captain is eating a wonderful dish!
Verse 7
The captain grew dizzy, his stomach did groan,
With all of these creatures all turning to stone.
He took a deep breath and he swallowed a whale,
From the tip of its snout to the fluke of its tail!
Chorus 7
(Fast, in one big breath!)
And the whale began to spout,
And the clam clamped his beard,
And the eel gave a shock,
And the lobster did pinch,
And the squid ink did fly,
And the crab bit his tongue,
While the herring went down with a splash and a splish,
Oh, the captain is eating a wonderful dish!
