In Matthew 22, Jesus tells the story of a king who prepared a great wedding banquet for his son. The Refusal The king sent servants to call the invited guests, but they refused to come. He sent a second group, telling them the oxen and fattened cattle were butchered and everything was ready. Still, the guests ignored him—one went to his farm, another to his business. Some even seized his servants, mistreated them, and killed them. Enraged, the king sent his army to destroy those murderers and burn their city. The New Guests The king then told his servants, "The wedding is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come." He ordered them to go to the street corners and invite anyone they could find. They gathered everyone—the "bad as well as the good"—until the wedding hall was full. The Wedding Garment When the king entered to see the guests, he spotted a man not wearing wedding clothes. When the man couldn't explain why, the king had him tied hand and foot and thrown into the "outer darkness." Jesus ended the story by saying: "For many are invited, but few are chosen."
