Prompt / Lyrics
(Verse 1) He was a hazel-eyed boy with his head held low, Walkin’ in the school yard where the mean ones roamed. Older boys cursing’ and pushin’ him every day, Those boys are jealous, the girls liked him that way He’d come home cryin’, he wasn’t built to fight, He won’t hit back, it’s wrong, doesn’t seem right (Verse 2) One afternoon the sun was burnin’ red, Books in his arms, trouble up ahead. A bully and his girl stepped out in his path, That boy felt the fear like a shadow from the past. The bully grabbed his arm, twisted hard and cold, The boy felt helpless—same story was gettin’ old (Pre-Chorus) But Mama saw it happen from the old front porch, She came runnin’ down fast like her feet were on a torch. The girl screamed, “There’s his mom!” as she backed away, The bully cursed his mom and that was all he had to say (Chorus) Yeah— somethin’ deep inside the boy came alive, Like a fuse that sparked after years of tryin’ to hide. His anger roared up, took hold of his pure soul, He swung like thunder and his fear lost control From that moment he didn’t need to run or hide, The fire rose up from somewhere deep inside (Verse 3) That bully hit the dirt, didn’t know what to do, The kid he used to torment finally broke through. Mama looked on with fear and surprise, The warrior woke up behind her baby’s eyes. Word spread fast of what the quiet boy had done, Not backing down no more, the war has just begun (Chorus) Yeah— something deep inside the boy came alive, Like a fuse that sparked after years of tryin’ to hide. His anger roared up, took hold of his pure soul, He swung like thunder and his fear lost control From that moment he didn’t need to run or hide, The fire rose up from somewhere deep inside [Guitar Solo] (Bridge) Sometimes it takes one push too far, One cruel word to light the spark. Sometimes the bully’s the very one, Who wakes the strength of a mother’s son. (Final Chorus) Oh— now a little older but the fire still burns bright, Now defending others who don’t wanna fight, What started as pain became a force of might— He learned to fight back, and refused to hide. Yeah, from that moment, he walked with pride— The boy who thought he couldn’t… Found the fire inside… Oh— that fire burns inside Yeah, yeah— he ain’t going to hide…no— (Guitar solo wails and fades out.)
