Prompt / Lyrics
THE NIGHTMARE Verse 1 I woke up the other night and sat straight up in bed, crying from a nightmare that still runs through my head. I dreamed we were living in a house I’d never seen, and the truck I drove to work each day was a funny shade of green. Verse 2 In my dream I came home early, pulled into the drive, and saw that you and all the kids had packed up and left my life. I tried to speak, but nothing came— no breath, no sound, no clue, and that’s when I thanked the Lord nightmares don’t come true. Chorus I’m sure thankful dreams don’t come true, ’cause if they did, I don’t know what I’d do. I can’t shake this feeling that I’m losing you. So tonight I thank the Lord that dreams don’t come true. Verse 3 As I tossed and turned that night, I saw ten years down the road. You still looked the same to me, but I had grown old. You were living with someone else, my boys were growing tall. Ten years of memories, and I had missed them all. Verse 4 My son held up an old photograph— a picture of me back when you used to make me laugh. He looked at you and whispered, “Mom… who’s that?” And that’s the moment my whole world cracked. Chorus I’m sure thankful dreams don’t come true, ’cause if they did, I don’t know what I’d do. I can’t shake this feeling that I’m losing you. So tonight I thank the Lord that dreams don’t come true. Outro Yeah, I’m thankful dreams don’t come true, ’cause if they did, what would I do? I can’t shake this feeling that I’m losing you. Tonight I thank the Lord dreams don’t come true.
