Prompt / Lyrics
Just turned 18, all grown up ready for the fight. Puts on his uniform supporting those Stars and Stripes Looking over his shoulder, all in the dead of night. Missing those loved ones, as they all start to write. As the months go by, the letters came no more. Few more weeks later, mom and dad get that knock at the door. Men holding a folded up flag, both knowing what for. Dad yelling for his boy as mom just hit the floor. All for a piece of concrete with your name written below. Stuck in the ground, surrounded by flowers with no place to go. Lying in a pinewood box, the last place you will call home. In that one small area, that is right up the road. Old farmer working since he was just a boy. On the same land his daddy worked in central Illinois. Growing everything he could, from corn to soy. Wife waiting patiently for him to walk in with joy. Night fall comes, as she takes a deeper breath. Running outside to find him lying down, now she’s a mess. Trying to keep it together is her final test. Making him comfortable for his final rest. All for a piece of concrete with your name written below. Stuck in the ground, surrounded by flowers with no place to go. Lying in a pinewood box, the last place you will call home. In that one small area, that is right up the road. Husband and wife get there great news about having a kid. Both painting walls together to making the crib. All hugs and smiles, there little family is getting big. Days getting close, doing everything they always did. Dr. comes in saying I have some bad news. Husband looks down, knowing there’s nothing he could do. Hugs the wife one more time, saying it was way too soon. Never holding either one of them, going home to nothing but empty rooms. All for a piece of concrete with your name written below. Stuck in the ground, surrounded by flowers with no place to go. Lying in a pinewood box, the last place you will call home. In that one small area, that is right up the road.
