Invisible

We grew up side by side, through the years and time,

Since the days of kindergarten, in the same old line.

But I barely knew her, not even her name,

Though she carried the weight, while we played the game.

She was the girl who laughed, the one who always stayed,

Helped us with our homework, gave more than she was paid.

Shared her lunch with strangers, her books with the cruel,

Always with a smile, though we were blind and fools.

And she was invisible, though she gave us everything,

Her kindness like a river, but we never saw it sing.

Behind her smile were tears, that we never knew,

She was invisible… till the day she shone through.

Evenings full of silence, letters never read,

Scars upon her skin, and words she never said.

She slipped away from school, vanished from our sight,

And I never missed her name—

God knows, I never got it right.
