Prompt / Lyrics
[BARD – INTRO] Come closer to the firelight, Let your ale burn slow and warm— I’ll sing you of a gentle boy Who lived inside a storm. A father’s hand, a twisted fate, A soul that broke in waves… And the monster he became To crawl out of the grave. [VERSE 1] When he was just a ragged child, He only wished for peace— To chase the sun through fields of grain, To let the shouting cease. He wanted games and laughter, Mud and river stones— Not a house with smashing bottles And the crunch of breaking bones. [VERSE 2] His father was a thunderhead In human, bitter shape, With fists that spoke before his mouth And nowhere safe to escape. He learned to read the footsteps, To tell the moods by sound— But every night the liquor came, And every night, the pound. [VERSE 3 – FATHER] “Look at you,” his father sneered, “You soft, pathetic thing— A useless, whimpering scrap of flesh Not fit to serve a king. You think the world will spare you, boy? You think it’s kind somehow? You’ll either break or turn to me— A monster, starting now.” [VERSE 4 – BARD] The boy would hide beneath the bed, Arms over head and ears, And dream of being someone else In some bright future years. But every bruise and broken rib, Each insult like a chain, Drove iron slowly through his heart And filled his blood with pain. [VERSE 5 – FIRST PERSON] “I was born without claws,” he’d whisper, “When the world is made of teeth. Born without fangs or scales or flame, Just skin and bone beneath. If I must live where monsters feed On weak and gentle men— Then I will stop being prey… And never break again.” [VERSE 6 – FORGING] So he stood before the fires Of the blacksmith down the lane, Paid in stolen coppers And in uncried shame. “I was born without claws,” he swore, “So I’ll forge my own in fire— I’ll craft my fangs and scales of steel And climb out of the mire.” [VERSE 7] He learned to work the anvil, Learned the language of the blade, His palms grew hard as leather, His tenderness decayed. Each sword he shaped a promise, Each dagger was a vow— Someday he’d be untouchable, And none would hurt him now. [VERSE 8 – JOINING WAR] He left that broken, stinking house To take the soldier’s pay, A nameless boy with iron eyes Who marched to wars away. He stood in line with killers, With thieves and butchered men, And every battle carved a piece He’d never find again. [VERSE 9 – BARD] He lost his first true friend in mud, His second in a flame, His third fell choking on his blood While calling out his name. The gods were silent, distant things, The priests were blind and proud— And each time someone precious died He cursed them all aloud. [VERSE 10 – FATHER / MONSTER ECHO] [FATHER] “Told you, boy, the world is teeth.” [MONSTER] “So sharpen, don’t you cry.” [FATHER] “They take and take and take from you.” [MONSTER] “So take before they try.” [FATHER] “You’re nothing if you’re gentle.” [MONSTER] “You’re prey if you are kind.” [BOTH] “Become what they all fear in you And leave the rest behind.” [VERSE 11 – BARD] He wrapped himself in armor, In scars and iron rings, He learned to love the weight of steel, The song of bowstrings. His smile became a stranger’s grin, His eyes a haunted blaze— And soon the tales about his wrath Outran his living days. [VERSE 12] They called him demon, called him fiend, A reaper dressed in mail, A man who never flinched at gore, Whose mercy always failed. Yet still inside, a broken shape, A boy remained in chains— But every loss, each cruelty, Just tightened those remains. [VERSE 13 – FIRST PERSON CONFESSION] “I buried all the softness, I smothered every plea. If all I ever get from life Is what it takes from me— Then I will be its sharpened edge, I’ll be its closing jaw. I’ll learn to live the way it taught: By fear, and blood, and awe.” [VERSE 14 – MEETING HER] Then one night in a smoky inn, Where bards sang lies and truths, Where gamblers laughed and fortune wept, Where fools threw back their youth— He saw her in the lantern light, A calm in all the din, And something cracked inside his chest That war had welded in. [VERSE 15] She poured the ale with steady hands, Her gaze both sharp and warm, As if she’d seen such monsters And knew they’d once been born. He ordered drink with growled voice, Armor filthy, eyes like coal— Yet when she met his mismatched stare, She smiled as if he’d soul. [VERSE 16 – HER QUESTION] “Rough road?” she asked in gentle tone, He scoffed and looked away. “You don’t want stories out of me. They only spoil the day.” She answered, “I’ve heard worse than you. I’ve seen what men can be. If you’re still able to feel pain… You’re not lost entirely.” [VERSE 17 – BARD] He came back night on aching night, Though war still called his name, Drawn to that strange, stubborn light That never bowed to shame. And slowly she undid his guard With words too small to note— A cup refilled, a bandaged hand, A song caught in her throat. [VERSE 18 – FATHER’S VOICE] [FATHER] “She’ll leave, you know, like all the rest— Or die and make you bleed. Everything you touch goes cold. You are the rot they feed.” [MONSTER] “Best to scare her off right now, Before she reaches in.” [FATHER] “You’re not made to be adored.” [MONSTER] “You’re only built to win.” [VERSE 19 – HE PUSHES AWAY] So he snapped and snarled and barked at her, Tried driving her away, Said, “You don’t know the things I’ve done, The things I’ll do someday.” But she just shrugged and met his rage With eyes that did not shake: “If you still fear what you could be… Then you’re more than what you break.” [VERSE 20 –] “I didn’t know how not to bite, How not to swing or sneer— Didn’t know how to hold a thing Without it disappearing. But she kept standing next to me Like I was worth the scar, Like even if I was a beast, I was her beast, so far.” [VERSE 21 – FINDING PURPOSE] And slowly, killing lost its taste When she was near his side, He found he fought not just for gold, Not merely out of pride. Now when he donned his steel-clawed mail, His breath a thundered roar— It wasn’t just for vengeance, But to keep her from war’s door. [VERSE 22 – THE THREAT] Then came the day a kingdom burned And panic split the land, A tyrant king with twenty-thousand Spears at his command. They marched on every village, On every broken town— And on the inn where she now lived, They sought to strike her down. [VERSE 23 – CHOOSING THE FIELD] He stood upon a battered hill Between her home and death, Alone in rusted armor, With hate in every breath. Below, the endless army moved Like locusts on the plain— To them he was one man to crush, One skull to split in twain. [VERSE 24 – FATHER & MONSTER] [FATHER] “There, boy. This is all you’re for— To break and break and break.” [MONSTER] “We’ve always been their reckoning, Their drowning in the lake.” [FATHER] “No one will thank you when you fall.” [MONSTER] “No one will say your name.” [BOTH] “So paint the world in what you are— A walking, grinning flame.” [VERSE 25 – HER VOICE] Behind him, from the ridge of stone, Her voice cut through the din: “If you come back from this at all, Come back the way you’ve been. Don’t lose yourself completely, love, Don’t let the monster win.” He didn’t turn—just raised one hand As if to hold her in. [VERSE 26 – HIS SPEECH] He faced the roaring multitude, Their banners, steel, and hate, And smiled like a demon That had slipped through every gate. Then loud enough for gods to hear And men to feel their bones, He gave the words he’d carried From his marrow into stone: “Your gods will not save you— They’ll choke on their lies. Your prayers taste sweeter When nobody replies. I am the whisper, The poison, the blade. I am the end Of all of your days.” [VERSE 27 – FIRST BLOW] Then steel screamed out of scabbards, The horns of battle cried— He ran downhill like judgment On a world that never tried. The first line broke beneath his charge, Like driftwood in a flood— And all who thought him only man Now learned the taste of blood. [VERSE 28 – MONSTER’S SONG] [MONSTER] “Yes, that’s it. We were made for this— For ruin, crush and tear. In every crack of breaking bone We find our answered prayer. Forget the boy who wanted peace, Forget the softer ways— This is our cathedral now, These are our holy days.” [VERSE 29 – BARD] His blade became extension Of the rage he’d always borne, He waded through the twenty thousand Like a scythe through corn. Arrows broke against his plates, Spears snapped in his grip, His laughter sounded terrible— A wild and jagged rip. [VERSE 30 – FATHER’S TAUNT] [FATHER] “Look at you, my perfect son, Look at what you’ve become— Nothing but a storm of death, A butcher’s favorite drum. You blamed it all on me back then, My fists, my bitter years— But those claws you forged yourself, You earned these trembling fears.” [VERSE 31 – IN BATTLE] “I know,” he thought amid the crush, “I know what I now am— A thing that makes the brave men choke, A walking slaughter-ram. But every swing that fells a foe Is one less threat to her— If I must be the monster now… Then monster I prefer.” [VERSE 32 – SHE WATCHES] From high upon the stony ridge She watched him lose control, He moved like living nightmares Through a field of falling souls. Yet though the others hid their eyes, Though even bards turned pale— She saw the boy who once just cried Behind that armored veil. [VERSE 33 – TURNING POINT] When the last ten thousand faltered And the front ranks turned to flee, He stood alone in blood-soaked mud, A broken, burning tree. Breath ragged as a dragon’s last, His armor split and torn— Yet still he smiled that crooked smile So many cursed as born. [VERSE 34 – MONSTER VS LOVER] [MONSTER] “We could have killed the fleeing too, Make none to tell the tale.” [FATHER] “Waste nothing that can fear your name, Let terror be your mail.” But then he heard her footsteps Soft as fallen leaves— And for a breath the monster paused, Like frost beneath a breeze. [VERSE 35 – HER HAND] She walked across the battlefield, Through corpses, ash, and steel, Her dress stained red and black with proof Of what he’d come to feel. She touched his cheek with ruined hands, Unflinching at the gore, And whispered, “You’re still mine, my love, Not less than you were before.” [VERSE 36 – SHAKEN] “I don’t know how to be a man,” He choked between his teeth. “I only know the monster now, The ruin underneath. I’ve turned into the thing I feared, The thing my father praised— If you could see inside my skull, You’d scream at what I’ve raised.” [VERSE 37 – HER ANSWER] She answered, “Yes, you terrify— But not the way they say. You terrify the ones who think They’re safe to steal and slay. To me you’re teeth and shelter both, You’re storm and guiding flame— You may be monster to the world… But you’re my monster, all the same.” [VERSE 38 – MONSTER’S GRUDGING WORD] [MONSTER] “…If she will keep us by her side, Then maybe we can stay. We were forged to break and bite and burn, But she can bend the way. We’ll never be the gentle boy Who wished the hurt would cease— But in her shadow, dripping red, We might yet learn of peace.” [VERSE 39 – LEGEND] And so the tale grows longer Every time the story’s told, Of the man who faced twenty-thousand With a heart of scorched-up gold. They say his name in frightened tones, They flinch at what he’s done— But whisper, too, of eyes gone soft When she calls him “my one.” [VERSE 40 – BARD’S OUTRO] So raise your cups to broken boys Who had no claws at birth, Who forged their fangs in furnace fires To survive a savage earth. And if you ever meet the pair Upon some bloodstained plain— Remember: monsters aren’t always wrong… Sometimes they’re what remain.
