Prompt / Lyrics
(Intro - Soft Piano and Cello. Brass swell, subtle percussion. Drums enter on the second line of Verse 1.) Verse 1 (The Man - Low, troubled vocal) The shadow clings, a second skin, a prison built from what's within. I’m on my knees, I beg the Lord, "Draw out this sickness, cut the cord!" I feel the fight, I claim the win, but still, the war begins again. (Strings rise, mournful French horn counter-melody.) Pre-Chorus (The Man - Voice rising, frustrated) They say the exit sign is near, they say the dawn will make it clear... But every time I reach the door, I fall back to the ground once more. Chorus (God/Narrator - Soaring, powerful vocal. Full Rock Band, Brass, and Orchestra hit hard.) Your time has not yet come, my son, your victory is not yet won! Endure the fire, you must wait, for what is coming at the gate. The evil that you seek to flee, is training you for ministry! It is your partner in the fight, to teach you how to claim the light! Verse 2 (The Man - Resigned, softer) I've learned to parry, learned to hold, I starve the beast but want it more. You call this training, call it grace? To stare this darkness in the face? I’m mastering defense, I try, while every part of me asks why. (Brass is more martial, like a slow military beat.) Pre-Chorus (The Man - Frustration returning) They say the exit sign is near, they say the dawn will make it clear... But every time I reach the door, I fall back to the ground once more. Chorus (God/Narrator - More intense, with a slight chaotic break from the orchestra before the final line.) Your time has not yet come, my son, your victory is not yet won! Endure the fire, you must wait, for what is coming at the gate. The evil that you seek to flee, is training you for ministry! It is your partner in the fight, to teach you how to claim the light! Bridge (The Revelation - Music drops to a low, driving beat. Bass and Drums only. Vocals are spoken/whispered with a growing intensity.) I know the Word, the living key, the only thing that sets men free. (Orchestra swells, then cuts out suddenly. Single, isolated trombone note.) He has kept me silent here. He knows the sound I will not make. I resist the final, saving move! I fight the very thing I should use! (The Man's voice cracks on the word "resist.") Guitar Solo (Soaring high over full band and orchestra.) Outro Chorus (The Man - Desperate, powerful, final high note on "Word." Full volume, almost overwhelming sound.) It doesn't want me to! It doesn't want me to! Speak the Word! Speak the Word! Speak the Word! It's been so successful in getting me to keep the Word... Unspoken! (Music crashes on the final word, fading out slowly with a dissonant chord from the strings and a single, lingering cymbal crash.)
