[Intro]
So. You climbed the stairs.
You made your cases to the court below, and now you want the crown to speak.
Alright. The crown will speak.
First finding, and it's true, and I don't say it loose:
you're both worthy. Write that down somewhere, so you'll believe it later.
[Verse 1]
I know what I am from down there.
The room that adjusts. The bar nobody tests. The standard —
you named me yourselves; I never asked.
The man on the mountain with the method and the miles.
Every word of it earned. Every word of it true.
And every word of it — listen now —
is a picture of somebody I remember being.
[Verse 2]
You, with the chalk still on your hands —
you see a man built like the sport itself.
You should have seen me at thirty-five.
You'd have walked into a wall. I'm not bragging; there are photographs.
And that man — hear this part too —
couldn't have written a page worth reading.
Didn't know yet what any of it was for.
And you, counselor — you see the mind, the shelf, the name that comes up in rooms.
You should have seen me when I fast-roped out of helicopters for a living.
That man could carry anything anywhere on no sleep —
and he wasn't worth talking to. Not yet.
Opinions, sure — everybody's got opinions.
He didn't have ideas of his own worth arguing.
Fifty books a year, twenty years running — that's what a conversation costs.
And the man on the conference stage, the one somebody saw once and claimed on sight?
He didn't exist yet either.
Every year took a card off my table and dealt me another. That's the ledger.
It's not the age — it's the miles. It was a colorful life,
and I bought every mile on purpose.
High mileage isn't wear. It's the credential.
[Verse 3]
And all of it is past. It isn't coming back.
The trades are done; I play the hand I'm holding.
Look around this room — you two, and her downstairs:
all three of you are still on the early side of your lives.
I'm not. That's not a wound; it's a map, and I'm reading it to you straight:
I'm still ahead of most men my age. Most rooms still adjust.
But I will never again be ahead of myself.
My line has a direction now. Yours don't yet.
That's the whole briefing.
[Chorus]
Provisional — everything you're looking at
Everything you think you came upstairs to win
Held like a morning, never like a deed
The world moves, the needs move, the seat moves with them
Nothing here is kept. Nothing here is owed.
And nobody gets picked — people pick themselves,
daily, with their hands, eyes open, knowing
Provisional
That's not a warning. It's the only honest invitation I own.
[Verse 4]
And the seat you're asking about — look at me — there is no seat.
Not because you can't have it. Because it doesn't exist.
The throne was always a chair.
A man sat in it long enough, doing the work,
and you gilded it yourselves, with your own eyes, from across the room.
That's the whole secret. People keep looking for the other secret.
There isn't any other secret.
[Bridge]
Now the other half, because provisional gets slandered:
nothing up here is under siege.
Nobody in this house will ever take a thing from you,
and nobody pushes anybody out.
Provisional turns permanent the only way it ever has —
one morning at a time, by the hands that mean to keep it.
That work is yours. It was always going to be yours.
And it can be done. Somebody's been proving it three years running.
You watched her show the math tonight.
[Verse 5]
So don't spend your twenties — or your thirties, counselor — holding a place in a line
for a man whose ledger only runs one way from here.
If you stay — and I'd be glad, I'll say that plain —
stay for what's actually in the building:
the work, the mornings, the people. Her.
Because the gold quits glittering eventually. Not today. But it quits.
And what's left is who you'd stand in front of.
That's the whole estate. And I choose it again every morning —
which is the only reason it's worth anything at all.
[Outro — bare]
So there's your verdict, from a man, not an emperor:
worthy — both of you — of everything except the keeping.
Now go home. Sleep. Decide with the sun up.
The door's not locked.
It was never locked.
That was also your gild.
