Rooftop Baby

We were just a couple of newlyweds,

Building dreams with hammer and thread.

Out on the farm, in the middle of June,

Watching our house rise under a honeymoon moon.

We came one night to check the beams,

The sun was settin' like a movie scene.

He found a ladder leanin' near a wall,

Said "Let's climb up darlin' , we'll have a ball".

He put his arm around me on that shingle roof top,

The stars came out and the world just stopped.

We didn’t say much, but the sparks sure flew---

And I knew what I knew when the sun slipped through.

Nine months later with a grin so sweet,

We were rockin' a cradle and two bare feet.

He's a grown man now, but here's the truth, maybe

I still call him my roof top baby.

We laugh now 'bout that sunset night,

How we went up two and came down three.

Didn’t need no doctor to tell me the news,

I felt it from my soul down to my shoes.

Now he's out there climbin' his own heights,

Got dreams and beams and long summer nights.

But when I look at that roof in the glow of the sun,

I see the night where it all begun.

Built a life from a sky high memory.
