I drove down to Alabama with a weight upon my chest,
Dad was entering hospice, so I came to do my best.
To sit beside my father while he headed toward his rest,
While missing all my babies back at home I loved the best.
I missed the noise, the laughter, little footsteps down the hall,
Their voices saying, "Daddy," yeah, I swear I missed it all.
I came to stand beside my dad before the final call,
Never knowing something little would help catch me when I'd fall.
Then I found a little pupp
y, barely seven weeks alive,
The runt nobody wanted, just the smallest little guy.
Everybody passed him over, but I couldn't tell you why,
'Cause something in those little eyes reached straight inside of mine.
Maybe God knew what I needed in that chapter of my life,
With my father slowly fading and my heart cut like a knife.
Missing home and missing children, trying hard to hold it tight,
Then that little runt named Jasper came and somehow brought me light.
Oh, Jasper, my boy, you were there through it all,
Started out the smallest, now you're biggest of them all.
When my heart was barely standing, you wouldn't let it fall,
The dog that no one wanted became my best friend through it all.
And if I die before I wake,
There's one promise that you've gotta make:
Love my family, tell 'em I'll be waiting at the gate,
And feed Jasper for me, brother—don't you dare forget his plate.
I thought that I had saved him when I chose to bring him home,
But the truth is Jasper saved me when I felt most alone.
Through the grief and through the heartache, every mile and every road,
Four paws walked beside me underneath that heavy load.
That seven-week-old little runt grew bigger than the rest,
But it wasn't just his body—it was something in his chest.
Loyal till the bitter end, his head against my leg,
Never asking me for anything but love, some food, and pets.
He came while I was learning how to someday say goodbye,
To the man who raised me up and taught his son to stand with pride.
Funny how when one light dims, another can arrive,
And a little unwanted puppy helped keep something else alive.
So when you hear me joking, there's a truth beneath the phrase,
There's a story about Alabama and some dark and heavy days.
There's a father, there's his children, there's a dog who found his place,
And a friendship born from sorrow that not even death could take.
Jasper, my boy, we've been right through it all,
From the smallest in the litter to the biggest of them all.
You never needed words—you came whenever I would call,
And if there's dogs in Heaven, boy, I'll meet you after all.
So if I die before I wake,
Don't let my best friend sit around and wait.
Scratch his head and tell him, "Daddy's saving you a place."
Fill his bowl and love him till we meet another day.
The runt that nobody wanted—
became the one I couldn't replace.
