River’s ancient path

Cormorants dive deep

in the river for a meal

as the sun rises.

The river is alive

under and over its surface

where fowl meet its fish.

Egrets and herons

fly along the river’s banks

to wade its shallows.

As fog lingers near,

the river winding slowly,

carves its ancient path.

Alligators wait

for the perfect moment’s strike

to lunge for a bite.

Fiddler crabs run fast

to hide in their little holes

from all the others.
