I told you not to judge me.
Now I’ma tell you why.
There was a time when I thought I knew everything.
Thought I could fix everybody.
Thought everybody who said they loved me meant it.
Thought every door I wanted was a door I needed to walk through.
I wouldn’t listen.
I had to learn the hard way.
I was reckless.
I spent too many nights tryna save somebody,
Giving everything while losing myself,
Saw the warning signs but I wouldn’t stop it,
Kept pouring from an empty well.
Tried to rescue women who didn’t want saving,
Thinking love could make everything change,
Wasted time chasing broken situations,
Then wondered why I walked away with pain.
People used me when they needed something,
Then disappeared when I needed a hand,
Had people look right into my eyes,
Tell me lies and still call me their man.
I got cheated on, trust got shattered,
Had me questioning what love really meant,
But instead of slowing down and healing,
I jumped right back in and did it again.
[Pre-Chorus]
They tried to tell me,
But I wouldn’t listen.
I saw the signs,
But I kept on drifting.
Thought I knew life,
Thought I knew better.
Looking back now,
I was young and reckless.
Chorus
Young and reckless,
Running through life with no direction,
Giving my heart to the wrong connections,
Ignoring every lesson.
Young and reckless,
I thought every loss was rejection,
Didn’t know God could use the pressure
To point me toward something better.
I can’t change those years,
But I understand them different.
I was reckless.
Verse 2
Then the hurt followed me into the church,
A place I thought would always feel like home,
But people are people even in the pews,
And sometimes their actions cut to the bone.
I got hurt and I walked away,
Left my home church carrying the pain,
I wasn’t running from God,
I just didn’t understand
How somewhere meant for healing
Could leave me feeling that way.
I let disappointment cloud my vision,
Let somebody’s actions change my position,
Instead of bringing the hurt before God,
I packed up my heart and created distance.
Now I understand something I didn’t then:
My faith can’t depend on imperfect men.
People might fail me,
People might change,
But God ain’t the one who caused my pain.
I blamed everybody for a while.
The ones who lied.
The ones who used me.
The ones who broke my trust.
The ones who hurt me.
But eventually…
I had to look at me too.
Because sometimes I knew better.
And still chose wrong.
I didn’t listen when wisdom was speaking,
Thought correction meant somebody was against me,
Pride had me fighting the people who loved me,
While I kept trusting people who would eventually leave.
That’s a hard truth to put in a song,
But if I’m telling my story, I’m telling it all.
I wasn’t innocent in every situation,
Sometimes my choices helped cause the fall.
I gave second chances that should’ve been endings,
Stayed in places I had outgrown,
Confused being needed But I can make sure
they weren’t for nothing.
