PLAYED WITH YOUR FOOD
Verse 1
There once was a little girl nobody could see,
Her mama loved a bad man more than she believed.
When the little girl told her what he did behind that door,
Mama called her a liar—and believed him even more.
Till the MPs came and took him, but the damage had been done;
Mama barely spoke to her all the way back home.
Her sister still got loving; she learned to need none.
She learned how to disappear, how to watch, when to run.
Verse 2
Years later came a knocking on her bedroom door,
Mama stood there crying like she’d never cried before.
That man had “found Jesus,” put confessions in the mail,
After lying to the generals and colonels without fail.
Mama clutched her letter, laid the girl’s upon the bed,
But those tears were for that man—not the child he left for dead.
And a voice inside her whispered, Don’t you let him back within.
So she never broke the seal—
And he never touched her again.
Chorus
I know what ugly looks like;
I have worn it like a skin.
I have seen it in the faces
Of the people who should’ve been
The ones who stood beside me,
But I learned to stand alone.
You mistook my healed-up scars
For wounds that you could own.
I do no harm, but I take no shit.
My life is mine tonight.
You only get one shot at me—
You’d better get it right.
Verse 3
At fifteen, bags were packed in a house alive with snakes,
Mama high and throwing her away for one mistake.
So she left and learned to play dumb, learned to play pretty too,
Learned that men reveal themselves when they underestimate you.
She thought she made them save her; thought she had the upper hand,
But predators smell wounded girls before girls understand.
Still, she saw what they concealed and heard what they left out,
Learned to hide how much she knew behind a smiling mouth.
Verse 4
She could’ve turned into a wolf, all appetite and teeth,
Could’ve made the world pay for what was stolen underneath.
But all she ever wanted was some peace inside her skin,
So she found the Twelve Steps and she found herself again.
She had tried to disappear; she had tried to self-destruct,
Then she chose to be the survivor and refused to stay stuck.
What her mama saw while looking wasn’t who that child became—
Now nobody gets to use her past
To tell her who she is today.
Final Chorus
I know what ugly looks like,
’Cause sometimes I’ve been there.
But I owned the harm I caused
And I learned to leave it there.
I don’t need you to believe me.
I don’t need your approval now.
I value my own judgment—
I fought too hard to hear it loud.
I do no harm, but I take no shit.
I see your game in sight.
You only get one shot at me—
You’d better get it right.
Outro
You thought that I was wounded.
You thought that I was prey.
You thought if you kept circling,
I’d forget I walked away.
But where I come from, hunger
Ain’t an excuse to toy and bite.
You should never play with your food—
Especially when your food can fight.
