Prompt / Lyrics
The twenty-fourth of December, the snow is fallin' fast, My engine gave up the ghost, seems the journey couldn't last. The wipers are freezin', the radio's hummin' low, Just fifteen short miles and I should be home, you know. I see the red taillights, a long, frozen queue, Stuck in this silent white night, nothing I can do. But I pictured the look on her face, and the kids by the tree, I just can't let this Christmas happen without me. Oh, I’m walking through the snow, I gotta make it home! To the light in the window, where I never feel alone. It’s cold outside tonight, but my heart is warm and bright, For the Christmas magic is waiting, when I hold you tight! Gotta make it home, gotta make it home, through the ice and the storm! I tap on the steering wheel, running through the options clear, A tow truck won't make it, not for a day, I fear. The gasoline is running thin, the heater starts to fade, There's only one choice left, a promise that must be made. I turn the key and pocket it, step out into the white, My boots sink deep in the drift, I walk into the night. This frozen road is silent now, just the crunch beneath my feet, Every step is a prayer that the time, I can still beat. My lungs are burnin' with the cold, my fingers turning blue, But every thought of their sweet smiles, helps me break right through. Maybe the hard-won journey, the struggle and the cost, Makes the warm welcome home, worth everything I’ve lost. I push through the final clearing, and there it is, the warm glow, The best damn sight a man could see, through the white falling snow. I open the door, and the warm air hits my face, They shout and they cheer, they run to my embrace. The turkey’s just resting, the carols start to play, We hug a little tighter this year, at the close of the day. Yeah, the road was a nightmare, but here with my kin, This is the best Christmas ever, 'cause I had to walk in.
