A Soul Brought To Life

I lived my life against God,

Thought I had all the answers in my hand.

I built my pride on self-sufficient dreams,

Said faith was just a story made by man.

I walked a road that led to empty places,

A valley where the sunlight couldn't stay.

I wore my chains and called them freedom,

Till the darkness took my strength away.

My soul was dead and buried deep,

Beneath the weight of all I'd done.

I knew I was lost, too far to find,

Too weak to even start to run.

I couldn't reach Him, so He reached me instead,

Through the blood His Son so freely shed.

He lifted me up from the grave I was in,

And opened my eyes to His mercy again.

I still don't know what He saw in me,

But His grace set a captive soul free.

When I finally turned my eyes toward heaven,

I saw He'd always been standing there.

Patient through my rebellion and doubting,

Certain I was too far gone.
