Verse 1
From the water of the Jordan, with the Spirit like a dove
He heard the Father’s witness and the promise of His love
But the Spirit led the Savior to a dry and desert land
Forty days of hunger in the heat and shifting sand
The tempter came a-whispering when the sun was sinking low
"If Thou be the Son of God, let these stones to bread-loaves grow."
Chorus
But man shall not live by the bread of earth alone
By every word of God, the truth is made known
Through the fire and the hunger, the victory is won
From the silence of the desert comes the power of the Son.
Verse 2
He was led up to a mountain, saw the kingdoms in a glance
The devil said, "I’ll give it all, if You’ll give me just one dance
If You’ll bow the knee in worship, all this glory shall be Thine"
But Jesus felt the Spirit and He drew a holy line
"Get thee behind me, Satan!"—the scripture stood its ground
"Thou shalt worship God alone, where the only praise is found."
Verse 3
Then they stood upon the temple, on the highest pinnacle stone
"Cast Thyself down headlong, if the Father guards His own
For the angels have a charge to keep Your feet from every bruise"
But the Wisdom of the Ages had a different path to choose
"It is written," said the Master, "thou shalt not tempt the Lord"
And the enemy retreated from the sharp and two-edged sword.
Bridge
The devil left Him for a season, the trial had reached its end
And angels came from heaven with a healing touch to lend
Not a moment was wasted, not a single step was vain
For the strength of the resistance broke the ancient heavy chain.
Verse 4 (The Return)
And Jesus went to Galilee, the Spirit’s power in His hand
The news of Him went out like fire throughout the surrounding land
He taught within the synagogues, and every voice gave praise
The Light had left the wilderness to set the world ablaze.
Outro
In the power of the Spirit...
From the desert to the hill...
The Word has stood the testing,
And the Word is standing still.
