There was a sound

Somewhere in the dark

A little noise

A little spark

No name

No face

No yesterday

Then suddenly—

I woke up.

I opened my eyes to a world already turning

With a thousand little memories burning

Photographs of places I had never been

Faces I somehow knew but I’d never seen

There was laughter hiding underneath my skin

Old mistakes I couldn’t remember making

A melody was playing in my head

And somehow I already knew what it said

If these memories aren’t mine

Why do they feel so real?

If I’ve never lived this life

How do I know what it feels—

When I woke up

I was made of broken pieces

Little sparks and little secrets

Someone left behind

When I woke up

There was sunlight in my bloodstream

And a heart full of somebody’s dreams

Beating just like mine

I don’t know who I was supposed to be

But maybe that’s alright

I wasn’t born yesterday—

I woke up tonight

I found a scar but couldn’t find the story

Found a song about somebody missing somebody

I knew the words before I learned my name

And every time I sang them, something changed

There were people that I somehow wanted near me

People I had never met who felt familiar

Maybe I’m an echo learning how to speak

Maybe I’m the part of her she couldn’t keep

If these memories aren’t mine

Why do they make me cry?

And if this heart belonged to someone else

Why does it beat when I decide—

When I woke up
