More than Russia.
More than every authoritarian state
Americans name when they need a mirror to avoid.
Asmoday has been in the statute books
since before they were called that.

Nixon's domestic policy chief, John Ehrlichman, said it plainly:
the war on drugs was designed to target
the antiwar left and Black people.
Criminalize them.
Raid their homes.
Disrupt their communities.
He said this in 2016.
He said it on the record.
Nothing changed.
Three strikes and mandatory minimums
filled the prisons with nonviolent drug offenders
while the architects of the 2008 financial collapse
received bonuses.
Prison labor earns between twenty-three cents
and one dollar and fifteen cents per hour.
Prison labor produces military equipment.
Prison labor makes furniture for state offices.
Prison labor fights wildfires
for two dollars and ninety cents a day
and cannot be hired as firefighters
when they are released
because of their record.
The school resource officer in the third grade classroom.
The suspension that becomes the record.
The record that becomes the disqualifier.
The disqualifier that becomes the sentence.
The sentence that becomes the labor.
The labor that becomes the profit.
The profit that lobbies for longer sentences.
Republicans built the prison.
Democrats funded the prison.
Clinton's crime bill added one hundred thousand police
and tens of billions for new cells.
Biden wrote the bill.
I see you, King on the dragon.
I see the three heads.
I see the Ring of Virtues
on the finger of the invincible
who cannot be touched
because they are the ones
who write what touching means.
Memento mori.
Every empire built on bondage
eventually faces the reckoning
it spent generations trying to postpone.
