(A child’s plea)

Why do you yell when I’m in the room?

It feels like thunder, it’s so loud, boom-boom.

I just want to play, to laugh, to sing,

But you keep fighting—what’s that thing?

I don’t know why it’s so hard to see,

That when you fight, you’re hurting me.

I just want a smile, not a frown,

But all I hear is you putting me down.

Stop the fighting, please don’t fight,

I want you both to be alright.

Why can’t we just have fun today?

Why does this feel like we’re drifting away?

I don’t understand what’s going wrong,

It doesn’t feel like we belong.

Why can’t you love like you did before,

And not make me feel like I’m at war?

I want to feel safe, I want to be whole,

But these fights are taking a toll.

Why can’t we just laugh and be free,

Like we used to be—just you and me?

Stop the fighting, please don’t fight,

I want you both to be alright.

Why can’t we just have fun today?

Why does this feel like we’re drifting away?

So stop the fighting, please, oh please,

I want us back, I want some peace.

I need you both to see the light,

Let’s make it right, let’s end this fight.
