I Gave It, Then I Took It Back

I gave it to You like I meant it this time

Laid it down and said, “Lord, it’s Yours, not mine”

But then my mind started racing again

Doubt crept in like an old familiar friend

It’s not that I don’t believe You care

It’s just sometimes my faith ain’t all there

But You don’t roll Your eyes, You don’t walk away

You just whisper, “Try again today”

I gave it, then I took it back

Carried the weight ’til I started to crack

But Your mercy held what my hands let go

You’re patient with my yes and no

You don’t count the times I fall apart

You’re just glad I’m giving You my heart

If it takes a hundred tries to trust like that

You still take it every time I give it back

I beat myself up for the back-and-forth

But You remind me what grace is for

You’re not waiting for perfect, polished prayers

You’re just glad I know You’re there

So I come again with trembling hands

You take what little faith I have

And every time I drop the load

You say, “That’s what My arms are for”

I gave it, then I took it back

You’re just glad I’m giving You my heart

If it takes a hundred tries to trust like that

You still take it every time I give it back

You’re not a one-and-done kind of King

You’re the God of every offering

Even if it’s broken, scared, or small

You still want it all

I gave it, then I took it back

But You never once lost track

You stood with arms open wide

Not to scold, but to guide

And You don’t need me to get it all right

You just want me to keep coming to the Light

So if I give You the same thing time and again

You’ll take it with love, every time I let You in

You just say, “I’m here…give it to Me again.”
