[Saturday afternoon dub session] [Huge warm sub-bass, lazy swung drums, dusty Rhodes, melodica fragments, spring reverb, tape delay, soft environmental field recordings] [Bass movement: playful, ridiculously deep, never aggressive]
[Percussion: wood made drum set with leathver pads - played with hands, only low hrz, only analouge fitering, 1, 14. 17
'
[Male vocal: relaxed, observant, half-sung, half-spoken]
[Female vocal: occasional distant responses, soft and curious]
[Arrangement gradually reveals connections between sounds without becoming busier]
[Intro: insects, distant water, warm tape noise]
[Sub-bass slowly finds the groove]
[Rhodes: sparse suspended chords]
There goes another one
carrying something twice his size,
doesn't know about engineering,
doesn't need to recognize
the shape that's forming overhead,
the reason everybody crossed.
He only knows the one ahead.
He only knows the one behind.
[Dub delay catches the final words]
[Insect clicks answer the percussion]
The ant doesn't know it's a bridge.
[Sub-bass response]
Doesn't have to.
[Groove opens]
[Melodica: wandering, simple]
Down beside the drainage ditch
something little changed the mud,
something laid an egg beneath it,
something else arrived because
the shade was right,
the water stayed,
a root had made a hollow place.
Nobody sent invitations.
Still, everybody came.
[Female vocal: distant]
Everybody came.
[Bass: soft descending wobble]
[Rhodes answers in short chords]
Willow by the waterline,
feet down where the runoff goes,
pulling up what reaches it,
keeping things it doesn't know.
No laboratory coat.
No little clipboard in the leaves.
Just roots behaving like roots behave,
making different water underneath.
The willow doesn't know what it cleans.
[Spring reverb bloom]
Doesn't have to.
[Drums: deeper swing]
[Environmental sounds become subtly syncopated]
Some insect drills a doorway.
Some fungus takes the room.
Something follows something else
and suddenly there's somewhere new.
A bird moves seeds between the lots.
A beetle changes fallen wood.
A dam appears because teeth kept moving
where the moving water stood.
No meeting.
No minutes.
No architect explaining why.
Just a thousand local answers
and a pattern seen from high.
[Female vocal: close, gentle]
Seen from high.
[Sub drops away]
[Only hand percussion, insects and Rhodes]
The insect doesn't know who moves in next.
The flower doesn't know it's a road.
The river doesn't know what carries
everything inside its load.
[Sub-bass returns beneath “load”]
And we keep making little things.
Little useful things.
Smooth things.
Cheap things.
Bright things.
Things that last.
Things small enough to travel
where nobody expected them to pass.
[Male vocal: still relaxed, no dramatic change]
We call each one by what it does.
Bottle.
Wire.
Film.
Screen.
We name the thing in front of us.
Never what it means downstream.
[Dub echo: “downstream”]
[Melodica and female vocal briefly share Space]
