Through shadowed ways I wandered lone,
In weary, trembling dread;
A broken town about me lay,
As if all hope had fled.
Its windows dim, its gates undone,
Its hearths had lost their flame;
Yet not by God was it forgot—
My fear had wrought its shame.
I murmured low, “O let me leave,
Let sorrow’s grip be through…”
But softly then upon the wind
A voice familiar grew.
Before the road’s forsaken edge
A holy Presence came;
No stranger now, but God Himself—
I felt Him speak my name.
He took my trembling hand in His,
A touch both strong and mild,
And placed within my other palm
The seeds once mine as a child.
“Fear not,” He said, “for I am here
To guide thee on thy way;
Thy soul grew dim through doubt and grief,
But dawn shall crown this day.
Go plant these gifts I gave thee first,
Let courage now arise;
For what thou mendest with My light
Shall flourish ‘neath My skies.”
I knelt upon the barren ground
Where lonely paths divide,
And pressed the seeds into the soil
With God close at my side.
And lo, where once the dust lay still
New tender green was born;
The shattered walls with blossoms climbed,
The town revived with morn.
The golden light of early dawn
Spread warm through every street;
And as the darkness fled away,
My heart awoke complete.
God watched with ever-patient gaze
As life returned to me,
And in His voice I heard the truth:
“This place was meant to be.”
For it was not a land unblessed
Nor cast from Heaven’s care;
It withered by my timid heart,
By weight I could not bear.
But with His hand upon my own,
Its beauty rose anew;
The town was but my wounded soul—
He led me back to view.
Now through its lanes I walk in peace,
With steadfast heart restored;
No longer lost in fear’s embrace,
I walk beside the Lord.
The seeds He gave, the truths once known,
Grew bright because He stayed;
And in their bloom I learned at last
The town I feared…
He saved.
God is a steady loving guide.
