Long sleeves hiding broken hearts

Lipstick smile in the hallway light

Practice saying, “I’m alright”

Mama crying in the kitchen

Daddy swearing he could fix him

But she swears they just don’t see

The good man underneath

She reads fairytales like scripture

Paints his shadow like a picture

Thinks if she can love enough

She can turn his blood to gold

He shows up with roses shaking

Voice so soft, her whole heart breaking

“Baby please, I swear I changed…”

And she melts inside his rain

She thinks it’s Beauty and the Beast

That love can save somebody

That if she bleeds enough for him

He’ll finally become what he promised

But he’s Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde

Sweet blue eyes with poison inside

He ain’t cursed, he ain’t misunderstood

He’s a monster pretending he’s good

Tonight she’ll cry on the bathroom floor

Say she can’t do this anymore
