Never Quiet Again

First it was just me

One coffee cup, one TV

I could hear that old fridge hum

Plenty space, plenty sleep, plenty quiet

Then my sister called one day

Said, “We’ll just crash a little while, okay?”

Next thing, her hubby’s on my couch

And his toolbox lives in my hallway

First there was me

Then my sis, then her hubby

They brought a niece, and a nephew

And my mom movin’ in, oh buddy

Then a bird, then a dog

Then a dog for the dog’s best friend,

Why not make it three

We ran outta rooms, ran outta chairs

But we never ran outta someone there

House was full, and it only grew

House was never quiet again

Mom took over my kitchen

Said my pans “need proper seasoning”

My niece painted rainbows on the walls

In a shade I’m pretty sure ain’t legal

My nephew drums on every pot

That parrot learned all my bad talk

Dog guards the couch like it pays rent

And I just laugh payin’ for the snacks they spent

Sure I miss a silent night

Clean floor, clean sink, calm mind

But I’d trade every peaceful minute

For this loud, wild circus I live in
