No Rank In the Dark

[Verse 1 – Mark:[

Stormbreaker climbs through a firelit sky

Drakes on the windline, hunting us high

Engines are screaming, gunners all set

You hesitate once—and that’s all you get

Strongcastle blood says don’t break, don’t bend

So I give the order again and again

But up in the clouds where the dead just fall

There ain’t no time to feel it at all

Redcoats in line where the rail lines break

France in the mud with each step we take

I don’t have wings, I don’t have flame

Just men who look to me all the same

“Hold your position,” steady and clear

Even when I feel the panic near

You fight your monsters where none can stand

I fight mine where they die in my hands

[Mark:] I face the beasts that darken the sky

[Elizabeth:] I face the cost when your fallen arrive

[Both:] Different hells under the same black night

Trying to hold what we can’t make right

There’s no rank in the dark when the fighting’s done

Not in the shadow of what we’ve become

Just your hand finding mine like a lifeline now

When we don’t have to show them how

No sky, no ground, no crown, no name

No way to measure or place the blame

Just for a moment we don’t have to choose

Between what we carry and what we lose

Jackson just shakes his head at me

“Sir, you’ve got drakes at a thousand feet”

Stormbreaker waits, but I stay too long

Like right here’s the place I can come undone

You say it proper, I say it plain

Two different ways to survive the same

But you don’t flinch when I let it slip

The cracks in the man behind the ship

They march when I tell them, they trust I’m right

Even when I can’t sleep at night

Every command is a weight I keep

Every name is a debt I don’t get to sleep

You fight in seconds, in fire and air

I fight in hours that strip you bare

But when I’m here, I don’t have to lead

I can set it down… I can finally breathe

[Mark:] When Stormbreaker calls, I answer fast

[Elizabeth:] When the lines break down, I have to last

[Mark:] My war is over in flashes of flame

[Elizabeth:] Mine lingers on in the names… the names

[Mark:] I don’t know how you carry that weight

[Elizabeth:] I don’t know how you trust your fate

[Both:] But here in the dark we don’t have to pretend

We understand… we just don’t have to defend

There’s no rank in the dark, no sky, no ground

No lost or found when we’re not surrounded

Just the truth in the silence we finally allow

Like we don’t have to be them now

No class, no distance, no war to command

No need to justify where we stand

Just two commanders laying it down

When no one’s left to follow us now

[Elizabeth (soft):] When the bugles sound…

[Mark:] I’ll be gone to the sky

But here in the dark…

We don’t have to decide
