Flatbed Freddy

Two kids fell in love in high school,

First and last love they’d ever know.

They married young and built a life ,

Through highs and the lows, love made them grow.

She fixed hair, and he drove a flatbed,

Friends called him “Flatbed Freddy” on the road.

On weekends they danced at Daisy’s Diner,

The place everyone loved to go.

But time is a slippery lie,

Dreams fade in the blink of an eye.

She called his name through the rain that night,

And he swore he’d make it home alive.

They lost a baby along the way,

So they only had each other’s arms to hold.

Years passed by, the love kept burning,

But storms don’t always do what they’re told.

That night he finished his run in the rain,

Friends begged him to wait the storm away.

But he said, “No boys, I hear her calling my name’,

And I’ll be home by break of day.”

But time is a slippery lie,

Dreams fade in the blink of an eye.

Two headlights came in his lane that night,.

So Freddy swerved…and the kids made it home alive.

At the bottom of the ridge they found him,

Twisted steel in the pouring rain

They laid him by their baby girl,

And her heart never loved again.

She sat alone at Daisy’s Diner almost every night

But when the rain fell, she’d drive to the ridge,

Swore she saw his face in the lightning’s light.

One stormy night, she rose from her booth,

They begged her to wait, but she slipped away.

Her car slid hard at the top of the hill,

And she turned it toward the edge

‘Cause time is a slippery lie,

Dreams fade in the blink of an eye.

They laid her down by Freddy’s side,

And all agreed, with tears in their eyes,

She finally made it home…
